Collaboration with the Machine: Exploring Therapists' Role in Ethical Mental Health AI Development

CE Hours 2

About this course

There is no doubt that artificial intelligence is here to stay; however, many therapists express reticence about the role of AI in mental health practice. Many recent news articles have outlined the dangers of consumers relying on AI for mental health advice, particularly without proper safeguards. The risks may lead therapists to want to advocate against the use of AI in mental health assessment and treatment. This lecture will present a different perspective, based on research as well as Dr. Applewhite's experience in consulting to develop a AI-powered mental health support app. This lecture will review the research of AI support in mental health and weave it with implications for therapists' potential ethical responsibilities with regard to AI safeguarding in the mental health world.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe pros and cons for AI in mental health
  • Describe ethical dilemmas for therapists' involvement (or lack) in AI mental health development

Learning Levels

  • Introductory – Content is designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. Through this level of programming, the learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. An introductory level program also may serve as the foundation for subsequent intermediate and advanced learning. Introductory level programing may also be related to an emerging area of knowledge or practice. Although this content can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, an introductory level program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
