LGBTQ-Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Overview of Principles and Case Conceptualization

CE Hours 2

About this live event

***NOTE: Unlike most of our live trainings, this training will NOT be recorded and will NOT be available for self-paced CE credit after the live event. The only way to receive this material is to attend the live event.*** Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment and deemed as the gold standard in addressing several psychological disorders. In the past decade, the treatment has been culturally adapted and tested to address the unique stressors faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Across several randomized controlled trials (RCTs), many which have been co-led by Dr. Soulliard, this culturally adapted treatment (i.e., LGBTQ-affirmative CBT) has demonstrated efficacy in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, and problematic substance use among LGBTQ+ individuals. This presentation will build on CBT skills by demonstrating how such strategies can be integrated with minority stress principles in psychotherapy with LGBTQ+ clients. Dr. Soulliard will also present an overview of research findings from recent RCTs of the treatment to further demonstrate its effectiveness.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the history and development of LGBTQ-Affirmative CBT.
  • Explain the six minority stress principles in LGBTQ-Affirmative CBT.
  • Identify the components of STAIRCaSE, a case conceptualization tool in LGBTQ-Affirmative CBT.

Learning Levels

  • Introductory – Content is designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. Through this level of programming, the learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. An introductory level program also may serve as the foundation for subsequent intermediate and advanced learning. Introductory level programing may also be related to an emerging area of knowledge or practice. Although this content can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, an introductory level program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.

Agenda

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. MST

Instructional methods include participating in audience polls, submitting responses/questions in the chat, and watching fictional therapy vignette videos. These methods will allow attendees to reflect on their own practice and ask questions directly relevant to their needs.

There are no scheduled breaks.

Disclosure

Thank you for your interest in attending our events! 100% of the proceeds from these events directly supports pro bono and sliding scale services at UCEBT. There are no known risks to attendees. Exposures applied with patients should be carried out with care for the intensity of the content they are being exposed to, their current mental health skillset, as well as their readiness/willingness for exposure work in general. Having these discussions with patients to provide informed consent and discuss how exposure works and what it might elicit for them can help mitigate risks. All clinical interventions should be carried out with thoughtfulness about applying exposure techniques and strategies without appropriate training and supervision. Further, this program discusses strategies for utilizing exposure interventions in psychotherapy and is in accordance with all APA ethics codes related to evidence-based psychological practice. Misapplication of the materials, or errors in the materials, could result in non-compliance with APA ethics codes. Dr. Soulliard acknowledges that he also conducts similar trainings on the treatment with the Yale LGBTQ+ Mental Health Initiative, supported by a grant from The Gill Foundation. Proceeds from the talk will be supporting our pro bono and sliding scale program. Conflicts of Interest: None. Commercial Support: None. AI Disclosure: Will be addressed in the training. CE Credit: One hours of CE credit is available for attendees who are present for the entire program. The Utah Center for Evidence Based Treatment (UCEBT) is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists.  UCEBT will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants.  The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Program Administrator in consultation with the members of the Continuing Education Program committee and the UCEBT Ethics committee.

While UCEBT goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which come to the attention of the event staff which require intervention and/or action from UCEBT.

Procedure for Submitting Complaints

One critical part of UCEBT’s mission is to improve the quality of mental health care by disseminating quality standards via training, research, and provision of expert consultation. To that end, UCEBT’s Continuing Education events strive to abide by the codes of ethics and rules of conduct of the professional organizations that allow us to approve and sponsor our continuing education events. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards is the responsibility of the Continuing Education Program Administrator.

If you have a complaint about a presenter, a staff member, provided facilities, or the company as a whole, please follow this procedure:

All complaints should be submitted via email:

  • Send your email to events@ucebt.com;
    •    If your complaint is about the behavior of administrative staff, please send it to info@ucebt.com
  • In the subject line, please type “Complaint: (title of event or other concern)”;
  • In your email, please specify:
    • The source of the complaint;
    • If there is anything you would like us to do to rectify the issue (exp. refund, changes to the presentation slides, an apology, informing the offending party);
    • Whether or not you would like to remain anonymous as we rectify the issue (not always possible depending on how the concern is rectified);
    • Whether or not you would like to be notified of the status of the issue as we seek to rectify it;
  • Regardless of what we are able to do to rectify the problem, we will use your complaint as part of our ongoing process of improving our services.

Please note: It is also possible to write your complaints in the course evaluation forms. Please be aware that these forms are anonymous, and we can’t respond to any complaints made through them. However, we will take any complaints submitted via course evaluation forms as seriously as we do those submitted to us directly.

Regarding refunds for continuing education events: In the case that a refund is given for any reason, the Program Administrator will determine if a certificate of attendance may still be issued to the individual receiving the refund. Certificates may be refused to individuals submitting a grievance only if the individual did not or will not complete the full set of requirements for receiving the certificate.

Regarding conflicts of interest: Presenters do not have access to either email listed above. The concern or CE event that is indicated in the email subject will determine by whom the complaint will be reviewed. For example, if an individual indicates a complaint regarding an event presented by Dr. Laura Rowley, then Dr. Rowley will not be among the individuals reviewing and planning to rectify the concern. If an individual indicates a complaint regarding the programming, then the individual in charge of programming will not be among those reviewing and planning to rectify the concern.
